Chapter One: Genesis

Fig. I

Unreleased "Aural" (2015)

This is the very first photograph I ever took that I felt was good enough to be called “art.”

My art photography has its roots in sound.

I was always fascinated with vacuum tubes and how the technology took that shape and form of glass, metal and heat and electricity and current and light: how it all came together to make… sound. There is something about the aesthetic and the ethos of these objects that struck a chord in me.

The work was first seen by Sari Ortiga (Crucible Gallery) who frequented my studio in Quezon City. He and National Artist Arturo Luz were collaborating on a photographic project that I was fortunate enough to be part of as Mr. Luz’  consultant for photography and eventual fine art printer. Incidentally, giving rise to Silver Print. (Another “genesis” story, but more on that later.)

Through both men’s encouragement and guidance, my first show opened in September 2015 at Crucible Gallery. Entitled “Aurals”, it featured 9 distinct images in limited editions.
